New
Age’s Body & Soul
Health Books
A book a day keeps the doctor away if, like these,
they focus on preventive health care.
By Christine Richmond
If you’ve been interested in trying an alternative
path to wellness but are confused by all the options,
check out some of these new titles. They take complicated
subjects – from breathing techniques to herbal remedies
– and make them easy to understand. Investing a little
time in reading about these preventive measures and
alternative approaches may mean less time spent in your
doctor’s waiting room.
Preventive Health Care
Eastern traditions teach us that illnesses often arise
from long-term imbalances. In Nine Ways to Body Wisdom
(Thorsons), Jennifer Harper, N.D. Ph.D., draws on both
Western science and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)
to produce a comprehensive and practical health guide.
Wood, fire, earth, metal and water, the five elements
of TCM, are related to organs in the body. Five pages
of questionnaires determine whether you have an element
out of balance and in need of support. Harper offers
a wide range of complementary therapies, including recipes
and aromatherapy, to holistically achieve balance and
well-being. “You are what you eat” takes on new meaning
in Live in the Balance: The Ground-Breaking East-West
Nutrition Program (Marlowe & Company) by Linda Prout,
which recommends specific meal plans to restore and
maintain good health (try increasing warmth on a cold
day by eating smoked salmon) and describes the ways
in which the body used protein, fats, carbohydrates
and sugars.
Emerging from winter feeling sluggish? In The Energy
Secret (Thorsons), Jane Alexander gives step-by-step
instructions on becoming more in tune with body energy,
emotional energy, environmental energy and spiritual
energy. She then shows breathing techniques, yoga postures,
color-therapy tips and simple exercises to harness these
energies to promote wellness. Best-selling author Earl
Mindell, R.Ph., Ph.D., known for his writings on herbs
and supplements, tackles the topic of vitality in his
newest book, Earl Mindell’s Peak Performance Bible (Fireside/Simon
& Schuster). He offers advice on nutrition and exercise
to increase energy in all aspects of life and also takes
a careful look at the “Hot Hundred” popular performance
enhancers – supplements designed to stimulate the body
or mind – such as green tea and pheromones.
Several new books assert that we can all learn to “read”
our bodies for warning signs of illness and elicit our
own healing powers. Well-known health intuitive Karen
Grace Kassy offers readers the chance to tap into their
own inner knowing in Health
Intuition: A Simple Guide to Greater Well-Being
(Hazelden Transitions). Kassy’s easy-to-follow instructions
and three-step system of meditation, invocation and
tuning-in show how to develop an understanding of the
body’s signals. She also offers tips to reduce stress,
such as affirmations to help release yourself from energy-draining
situations and people.
